The Mournes Are Set For a UNESCO Global Geopark status

Newry, Mourne and Down District Council is hoping to establish a UNESCO Global Geopark in the Mournes and two other other Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty in the district (Ring of Gullion and Strangford and Lecale). 

This status is awarded to areas with internationally important geological heritage. Anyone who has frequented the high granite peaks of Slievenaslat at Castlewellan MTB Trails or Slievemartin at Rostrevor MTB Trails will know that there are no shortage of such assets that could see the Mournes earn the title.

The proposed UNESCO Global Geopark in the Mourne (and other regions) will join 127 others across the world in 35 different countries, all of whom have been awarded this significant status on the basis of their internationally important rocks and landscape.
