2013's promising to be a very exciting year in the Mournes with lots of new adventure opportunities coming to the fore, the first being the ongoing £1.4 million development of the new Mournes Mountain bike trails.

Thanks to the efforts of many including NI Tourist Board, Down District Council, Outdoor Recreation NI and Newry and Mourne District Council, the Mournes will play host to almost 100km of purpose built Mountain bike trails.

Running through the stunning scenery of Castlewellan and Kilbroney Forests the trails are forecast to be of a 'World Class' standing and already attracting 'World Class' events. In mid 2013, the Kilbroney trails will play host to the World Fire and Police Games, while in 2014, the Castlewellan trails will play host to the Mtb Fest of the European Single Track Championships. Needless to say, while the contractors are busy installing the trails, we're busy installing the key facilities required to cater for those visiting whether it be a 'weekend warrior' or an 'international competitor'.

Given the proximity of our Castlewellan Centre located right at the trail head, we've added bike washing facilities to support our already existing shower/changing facilities and fairtrade coffee dock and plan to add Bike hire and accessories similar to that of our existing Canoe and Kayak hire and accessories services.

While given the proximity of our Annalong Centre as a central base for all the Mournes trails, we've added bike washing and storage facilities to support our already existing range of 'adventurous' accommodation options developed for Walkers, Climbers, Canoeists and Kayakers.

More details and pricing/package options for both to follow in due course. So if you're currently planning what to do in 2013, you may not need to look far past the Mournes for a complete host of adventurous options from the mild to the very very wild for all ages and abilities. And although the trails have yet to be completed, the Mournes are open all year round with everything else already on offer so no need to wait!
